Yesenia and Jordan have both landed in Bangalore and the implementation of the project is underway. With the help of our project partner Suresh, we have been visiting marketplaces to discuss with the street vendors our project and collect data for the database. Suresh has been an amazing partner to work with. He has worked for decades to bring rights and protections to the street hawkers and his dedication and hard work has been inspiring.
Our project is coming along well. The street vendors have been more than willing to learn and help. We were even invited to a baby naming ceremony, where we went to a Hindu Temple to see the newborn and share a meal. Below is a photograph that shows (from left to right) the treasurer of the National Hawker’s Federation, Suresh Kadashan (our project partner), Yesenia, the parents, another street hawker, and Jordan.
While we have definitely experienced culture shock, the compassion and generosity of the street vendors has been comforting. With each trip to the marketplace we are greeted with more smiles and are always made welcome. They bring us food, coffee, tea, and any accommodations that we may need. We have been treated to delicious (and spicy!) meals such as dosa, vada, and idli. We plan to continue to visit the marketplaces, and within the next week begin testing the communications tool. Our team wishes you all the best and will update soon. Thanks!
