Creating the Sangha Portal: An Online Community for ‘Prison Yoga Project’ Yoga Teachers

Michelle Pancake, Kresge College 2016

Prison Yoga Project (PYP) is fighting for restorative justice by teaching and holding frequent trainings guiding yoga teachers on how to teach in prison. This is a restorative justice program, because it gives Inmate access to coping mechanisms and yoga to heal from past and current traumas, possibly leading to lower recidivism. While PYP has trained over 1300 teachers and has teachers in over 280 prisons over the US, they are in need of capacity building to guide it’s teacher’s from the training to actually teaching in a prison. I am assisting them in creating an online community called the Sangha Portal (Sangha meaning community in Sanskrit) to connect the yoga teachers after the trainings. This online community will be a resource for grouping up local teachers into local and international Sanghas.
